Andrew Symonds takes out streaker

May 22, 2008

This poor guy gets smashed at a cricket match by a popular Australian cricket player. Here is an exert about the event:

Australia’s Andrew Symonds turned from all-rounder to security heavy as he decked a streaker during the second one-day final against India in Brisbane. Symonds was at the crease in the 10th over of Australia’s reply as the man ran onto the pitch. But as the streaker attempted to evade chasing police he instead took a shoulder barge from Symonds at the non-striker’s end.

Symonds could face a serious punishment if the International Cricket Council decides that he breached section 4.2 of the player’s code of conduct relating to a physical assault of a rival player, an official or a spectator.

The sanction for that is a suspension from five test matches or 10 limited-overs internationals - or even a life ban. Following the match, however, a Cricket Australia official indicated Symonds was “unlikely” to be reprimanded.

The 26-year-old Brisbane man who bore the brunt of Symond’s shoulder barge was held overnight in a Queensland police station. He was reportedly unhurt by the incident. Greg Chappell, a former Australian captain, escaped a fine for hitting a streaker on the buttocks with a bat during a match in Auckland, New Zealand in 1976.

Leave it to the folks down under to liven up a boring cricket match with a new feature called “Male Streaker Tackling”. An unidentified man dashed onto the field, but was almost immediately stopped for a loss when a security guard lowered his shoulder and nailed this guy to ground. (No word on how many points that’s worth in cricket.) Cricketer Simon Katich was playing when the man made his unexpected appearance and was impressed with the guard’s form. “That was one of the biggest tackles I’ve seen,'’ Katich said. “Geez it was a good sound too, it was fleshy.”
